GM 6L80 / 6L90 Transmission: What Fails, What to Replace & Parts Guide

The GM 6L80 and 6L90 are heavy-duty 6-speed automatic transmissions found in a huge range of GM trucks, SUVs, and performance vehicles — including the Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Escalade, Camaro, and Corvette. Produced from 2006 onward, these are rear-wheel-drive / four-wheel-drive units built for torque. They're also one of the most commonly rebuilt transmissions in the country.

6L80 vs. 6L90 — Key Differences

The 6L80 and 6L90 share the same basic architecture. The 6L90 is the heavy-duty version with stronger internals — wider clutch packs, heavier-duty input components, and a higher torque rating. It's used in the 2500/3500 trucks and larger SUVs. For most hard parts, the two are interchangeable, but always verify by year and application.

Common Failure Points

TEHCM (Transmission Electro-Hydraulic Control Module) — This is the big one. The 6L80/6L90 uses an integrated TEHCM mounted on the valve body that combines the solenoid pack, TCM (transmission control module), and valve body into one unit. When the TEHCM fails, you get harsh shifts, no shifts, limp mode, or a wall of DTCs. Replacement involves the entire valve body/TEHCM assembly.

1-2-3-4 clutch pack failure — The 1-2-3-4 clutch pack handles a lot of the work in this transmission. Burnt clutches here cause slipping in multiple gear ranges and are one of the most common internal failures.

Input carrier and planetary wear — The input carrier assembly can develop cracks or broken pinion pins, especially in high-torque truck applications. This is a catastrophic failure that usually takes out other parts on the way down.

Stator shaft issues — The stator shaft (early design vs. late design) is a known wear item. Early-design shafts can develop bushing wear that leads to pressure loss. Late-design replacements are more durable.

Bell housing cracks — The 6L80 bell housing can crack, especially in performance applications. A replacement bell housing is a straightforward fix if caught early.
