The Chrysler/Mopar 62TE is a 6-speed automatic transaxle found in the Dodge Caravan, Dodge Journey, Chrysler Town & Country, Ram ProMaster, and other FWD Chrysler vehicles from 2007 onward. It's one of the most common transmissions in the Chrysler fleet — and one that keeps rebuilder shops busy.
What Vehicles Use the 62TE?
The 62TE appears in a wide range of applications including the 2008-2020 Dodge Grand Caravan, 2009-2020 Dodge Journey (FWD and AWD), 2008-2016 Chrysler Town & Country, 2014-2022 Ram ProMaster (3.6L V6), and 2017-2020 Chrysler Pacifica (early models). With this many vehicles on the road, demand for 62TE parts stays consistently high.
Common 62TE Failure Points
Valve body and solenoid pack — This is the number one failure point on the 62TE. The solenoid pack is bolted to the valve body, and both the solenoids and the valve body bores wear over time. Symptoms include harsh 1-2 shifts, delayed engagement, flare-ups between gears, and various solenoid-related DTCs. Many shops replace the valve body and solenoid pack as a unit.
Underdrive clutch failure — Burnt underdrive clutches are common, especially in higher-mileage units or vehicles that tow. You'll see slipping in 1st and 2nd gear.
Overdrive clutch failure — Similar to the underdrive, the overdrive clutch pack can burn out, causing slipping in higher gears and poor highway performance.
Transmission overheating — The 62TE runs hot by design, and the minivan/ProMaster applications often add load (passengers, cargo). Overheating accelerates wear on every internal component.
Used vs. Genuine OEM vs. Remanufactured
For valve bodies, you have three tiers. A used OEM valve body is the most economical for a standard rebuild. A genuine OEM valve body (new from Mopar) gives you a factory-fresh unit with no bore wear — ideal for problem vehicles or customer-facing warranty work. And a full remanufactured 62TE transmission is the right call when the damage goes beyond just the valve body.
