Ford 8F35 Transmission: Common Problems & Hard Parts Breakdown

The Ford 8F35 is an 8-speed automatic transmission used in the Ford Escape, Bronco Sport, and other compact Ford and Lincoln vehicles starting in the 2020 model year. As a relatively new transmission, the 8F35 is still building its track record — but patterns are already emerging in the repair community. Here's what rebuilders and owners are seeing.

About the 8F35

The 8F35 is a front-wheel-drive / all-wheel-drive transaxle designed for smaller vehicles. It replaced older 6-speed units and offers smoother shifts and better fuel economy. It's a compact, efficient unit — but like any modern transmission, it has wear points.

Known Problem Areas

Valve body issues — The valve body in the 8F35 is a complex hydraulic control unit with integrated solenoids. Early reports from rebuilders indicate that valve body failures can cause harsh shifting, delayed engagement, and fault codes related to pressure control. Because the solenoid pack is integrated, the entire valve body typically needs to be replaced rather than swapping individual solenoids.

Pump wear — The transmission pump generates the hydraulic pressure that makes everything work. If the pump wears or develops internal leaks, you'll see low line pressure, slipping, overheating, and eventually complete loss of drive. A used OEM pump in good condition is the standard replacement path.

Differential noise — In FWD/AWD applications, the differential assembly is built into the transaxle. Bearing wear can cause a whining or humming noise that changes with vehicle speed. Replacing the differential assembly is common in higher-mileage units.

Forward drum problems — The forward drum assembly carries clutch packs that handle key gear ranges. Burnt or worn clutch packs inside the drum will cause slipping in forward gears.

Available Hard Parts

Because the 8F35 is newer, aftermarket parts availability is still limited. Used OEM hard parts from donor transmissions are often the best option for rebuilders. Key hard parts for the 8F35 include the valve body, pump, differential assembly, forward drum, center support with piston, and side pan.

At Husk Parts, we carry a full range of used 8F35 hard parts pulled from inspected donor units. All parts are cleaned, inspected, and ready for your rebuild.
