U760E vs. U760F — What's the Difference?
The U760E is the standard front-wheel-drive version. The U760F adds an AWD transfer gear set and output provisions for a rear differential. Internally, they share most of the same hard parts — the valve body, pump, clutch drums, and planetaries are largely interchangeable. The key difference is the transfer gear set and related housing components that the U760F adds for all-wheel-drive capability.
Common Failure Points
Valve body wear — Like most modern automatics, the U760E/F valve body is the most common repair item. Symptoms include harsh shifting, delayed engagement, and shift flare. The valve body in this family uses linear solenoids for precise pressure control, and both the solenoids and bore surfaces wear over time.
Pump issues — Pump seal and bushing wear can cause low line pressure, leading to slipping and overheating. A worn pump usually means the whole pump assembly needs to be replaced.
Differential bearing wear — Especially in the U760F AWD applications, differential bearings can develop noise over time. Replacing the differential assembly is a straightforward fix.
Direct drum clutch failure — Burnt direct clutches will cause slipping in certain gear ranges. The loaded direct drum assembly is a common replacement item for rebuilders working on high-mileage units.
